Girls Inc Westchester - Second Annual Power of the Purse Gala 2012

Posted by Jacqueline Vazquez on October 26, 2012 at 8:30 AM Comments comments (0)

It was a privilege to work with such a great Leadership Team at Girls Inc of Westchester.  Putting together their second annual power of the purse gala was an honor.

What is Power of the Purse?

Power of the Purse is a benefit event that recognizes some of Westchester’s most successful women; celebrates the next generation of up and coming female leaders; and calls upon the Westchester community at large to support Girls Inc. programs that give Westchester girls the skills they need to grow up healthy, educated, and independent and to realize their dreams.

Not your typical rubber-chicken fundraiser, Power of the Purse has as its centerpiece a runway show and live auction of handbags designed especially for the event in honor of selected local female leaders. The exciting show celebrates the achievements of these strong, inspiring honorees, and gives Girls Inc. girls a platform to share their dreams for their own futures. The event underscores the importance of investing in Girls Inc. programs that educate, inspire, and support the next generation of Westchester women leaders.

Gilda's Club is a FREE cancer support community for men, women, and teens impacted by cancer in any way. www.gildasclubwestchester.org.

Gilda's Club was opened in 1991 in fullfillment of Gilda Radner's dream to have an informal, welcoming place, like a clubhouse, where people living with cancer, their families and friends, might come together to laugh and cry, exchange information and experiences, find support and pass it on to others. Gilda's Club opened in 1995, in New York City.

For those who did not know who Gilda Radner was, she was a comedienne and actress best known for her sketch comedies on Saturday Night Live. She was married to actor Gene Wilder. When she became ill, after 10 months of false diagnosis she learned that she had ovarian cancer.

If you are waiting for Spring to do some "Spring Cleaning", why wait? Ladies if you have a Prom dress, Bridesmaids dress, a gown that you would like to donate to a good cause, then check out Operation Prom - where you can donate dresses for students who cannot afford to buy a dress, and give them a chance to attend their Prom.

Collecting Dresses and Accessories now through March 27, 2012. If you miss the March date, don't worry gather the dresses and put them away until October when collection starts again.

Noel D'Allacco, Founder & Executive Director of Operation PROM - Westchester County Headquarters

Self proclaimed Promologist, Noel D'Allacco, founded Operation PROM, a nationally recognized 501 c 3 not for profit organization in 2005. She began collecting bridesmaid dresses from clients and donated them to students from her high school in Yonkers, New York. Operation PROM was originally established to help low-income students attend their Proms by providing free Prom dresses and tuxedo rentals. It has since expanded to also help students with scholarships and school supplies. The organization primarily assists students who are sick, homeless or live in shelters and do not have family to assist them. To date, Operation PROM has helped thousands of students attend their prom at little or no cost. To request a free prom dress, students must be recommended by their guidance counselor and meet the requirements, such as a severe financial need, and the student should be passing all of their classes. Noel and her team oversee all national chapters of Operation PROM.
